Madison Winter Festival 2009
February 14, 2009 - Members of the Acacia Fraternity were present to volunteer for the Madison Winter Festival today, a weekend-long family and fun oriented event that also raised money for the Fit City Kids community programs.  Madison's Capitol Square was transformed into a winter wonderland with ice and snow sculptures, tubing hill and snowboard rail jam, World class cross country ski racing, and snowshoeing venues during this weekend-long event on February 13-15, 2009. This activity-filled event has family oriented activities, special events at the museums, public open skiing and more. This year, there will be again an attempt to break the World Record at the US100 meter sprint event.

Opposition pledged on frat house overhaul

The Acacia Fraternity house, a stately three-story Tudor revival built in 1927 at 222 Langdon St., is badly in need of expensive repairs.

To pay for the redevelopment, the fraternity has formed a joint venture with the Alexander Company that calls for a new five-story apartment with 18 units to be built in a gravel parking lot fronting Lakelawn Place.

But plans by the developer to renovate the historic frat house on the UW-Madison campus, and squeeze an upscale apartment building behind it, remain up in the air.

A final decision now rests with the City Council after the Madison Plan Commission failed to reach a consensus on rezoning for the $6.5 million project. The panel was deadlocked 4-4 Monday night, with chairwoman Nan Fey deciding not to cast a tie-breaking vote.

"When the commission is this divided on something, the council should make the final call," Fey said.

Frat House Proposal Fails In City Council Vote PDF Print E-mail

By the slimmest of margins, Madison's City Council voted Tuesday night against a downtown project that partnered a fraternity house with a local developer.

The development paired historic renovation developer the Alexander Co. with the Acacia House, 222 W. Langdon St., in order to bring much-needed improvements to the historic building. The plan involved turning the house into a combined fraternity and apartment building and adding an 18-unit apartment building behind the historic building on a gravel parking lot.

On a 10-9 vote, the motion to approve the project failed, needing one more vote to constitute a majority of the council. The project notably did not receive a recommendation from the Plan Commission, which voted 4-4 on the project at its meeting last week.

UW's Acacia house renovations put on hold PDF Print E-mail

A proposal for extensive renovations to UW-Madison’s Acacia fraternity house met a tied vote Monday night at the City of Madison Plan Commission meeting, and may go to the Common Council for further review.

The Langdon Street fraternity house has been working with the Alexander Company to transform the upper levels of the 81-year-old house into apartments, as well as build an additional four-story apartment building in the parking lot. Together, these buildings would be completed for leasing in August 2009 and are to be called Vesta Apartments.

Dan Peterson, communications director for Alexander Company, said the house was in need of some repairs, which would be completed at the same time as the new building.
